First of all, diabetes occurs when the beta cells in the pancreas which produce insulin are totally destroyed. As we know the food that we eat turns into glucose or sugar helping our body to use for energy. For instance, type 1 diabetes, the most severe type requires a wide range of procedures. People who suffer from this type of diabetes need a special treatment which include: administration of insulin injections, home blood glucose testing several times a day, a certain, calculated diet and also planned physical exercises. Even though, type 2 diabets is not so serios like type 1, it also requires a strict treatment which consists in special diets, physical activities, home blood glucose testing, oral medication and 40% of the cases require insulin injections.

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Acne is a common skin condition that almost everyone  experiences at some point in their lives.

While it is most common in teens and young adults,  over 80% experience at least some mild form of acne. Most people outgrow their acne by their 20’s, however, some people, especially women can experience outbreaks in their 40’s.

Acne typically occurs on the face but is known to also occur on the neck, chest, shoulders or back. It shows up in the form of pimples, generally known as whiteheads or blackheads. Large, deep pimples are known ascystic lesions. These are painful lesions in the pores, which can lead to scarring.

Acne Treatments
While there is no cure for acne, there are a number of  treatments used to reduce or eliminate outbreaks and hopefully prevent scarring.

- Benzoyl peroxide lotions often control mild acne and help in preventing new outbreaks. If these treatments do not work, a doctor can prescribe topical antibiotics to help kill the bacteria.

- Moderate to severe acne can often be controlled by combining topical benzoyl peroxide along with oral antibiotics. The combination has an increased effectiveness while decreasing the risk of developing bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.

- Acne with large painful cystic lesions might require a prescription treatment of topical retinoid (vitamin A).

- Recently, light wave therapy which has been federally approved, uses a narrow-band, high intensity blue light to treat mild to moderate acne. It is primarily used for conditions that have not responded to other treatments.

How Vitamins Work – Working For Us

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Vitamins are vital for our health and well being, which is beyond doubt, having been proved on many occasions. A look at vitamins in the history of the world, and unfortunately still today in developing third world countries, has led and is leading to many people suffering from preventable killer diseases and other general complaints of ill health. So don’t groan when your mom checks if you’re taking your vitamins!health
What they’re not

So they’re good for us, but they don’t actually give us energy. That’s the job of stuff like carbohydrates, fats and proteins. These are known as macronutrients, with vitamins and minerals being micronutrients.

What they are

So what are they then? Vitamins are molecular compounds made of organic chemicals that cannot be produced by the human body, but are necessary for its survival. Organic means they contain carbon, and in addition to which they are made up from hydrogen, oxygen, and a few with nitrogen and/or other elements in lesser quantities. They can vary quite a bit in chemical structure and this can affect how they work, but all the possibilities are known and quite well understood by nutritionists today thanks to decades of research by American, British, and European scientists.

Made to measure

Luckily though, not much is required in quantity. Vitamins are so effective that only tiny amounts need to be taken in each day through food or supplements. This is because they can be re-used several times before exhausting their goodness.
